The Eve Appeal
The Eve Appeal is the UK’s only gynaecological cancer charity raising awareness of all five gynaecological cancers (womb, ovarian, cervical, vulval and vaginal) and funding medical research to save women’s lives. Our research focuses on what will make the most difference; detecting these cancers early, predicting an individual risk and potentially preventing these cancers from developing.
Gynaecological cancers kill women and destroy families. In the UK over 20,000 women are diagnosed annually with a gynaecological cancer and some 7,700 die. That is 21 mums, wives, daughters, sisters or girlfriends each day. Yet despite these grim statistics, gynaecological cancers are neither a well-profiled nor a well-funded cause. The Eve Appeal is determined to change this by funding world-class research into gynaecological cancers.
Our latest project, FORECEE (4C), seeks to develop one test to predict the risk of four cancers; breast, cervical, ovarian and womb. Women will then be in a situation where they can decide what to do to prevent them from developing the individual cancers, for example having preventative surgery. The focus of 20th century medical research was on treatment and cures, but our ambition in the 21st century is to prevent these cancers – 4C can help make this a reality.
